Quayside IP was established in 2022 by Peter Kent, a Chartered UK Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney with more than twenty years’ experience in the patent profession.

Our office is located in the historic Quayside Maltings building at Mistley Quay, in North Essex. We are lucky to overlook the Stour Estuary, with its magnificent tidal vistas and visiting birdlife providing an inspiring backdrop for our work.

Prior to establishing Quayside IP, Peter was a partner at one of the UK’s leading firms of patent and trade mark attorneys, where he worked for sixteen years and was fortunate to work with excellent colleagues and clients, including Vestas Wind Systems A/S, Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan, Delphi Diesel Systems, Visteon Global Technologies, Shell, Ocado, Schlegel, Ecotricity and The Hearst Corporation. Peter has also worked with universities, including the Centre for Compressor Technology at City, University of London, helping to protect world-leading twin-screw technology commercialised by Heliex Power.

The establishment of Quayside IP has enabled Peter to provide his core attorney services personally to his clients at a competitive price point offering exceptional value.

Peter is dedicated to providing high quality attorney services to his clients. Peter has always worked prominently with direct clients and has drafted hundreds of patent applications, which are now granted and in force in various countries around the world. Peter is primarily instructed by experienced Patent Attorneys, working in-house or in private practice, who demand and appreciate work of the highest standard.

Peter has significant experience in automotive technology such as fuel injectors, engine control systems, gearboxes, HVAC systems, lighting systems, catalytic converters, airbags, cruise control systems and EV technology.

Peter works extensively with renewable energy technologies, most notably with wind turbines, and has drafted hundreds of patent applications in this field, relating to aspects such as airfoil designs, trailing edge flaps, vortex generators, winglets, leading edge protection, anti-icing systems, lightning protections systems, blade moulds, load sensors, cabling, transportation, drivetrains, generators and power electronics. Peter also has considerable expertise in composite materials and composite fabrication techniques such as vacuum-assisted resin infusion, VARTM and pultrusion.

Peter has also worked with SME’s to protect a diverse range of products, including graphical user interfaces for medical software, video game systems for casinos, desalination systems, wave energy converters, lights for HGVs, microwave processing technology, earphones, fashion accessories, noise cameras, haptic devices for relieving stress, sash windows and seals for windows and doors to name a few.

Peter specialises in EPO oppositions and appeals, and regularly represents his clients at oral proceedings at the European Patent Office. Over the past fifteen years, Peter has worked on oppositions and appeals almost on a daily basis, which has led to him developing significant expertise in this area. Peter trained and mentored attorneys to handle oppositions and appeals whilst a partner at his previous firm. Peter has a consistent record of achieving excellent outcomes for his clients both when attacking and defending patents. Peter regularly provides freedom to operate assessments, non-infringement opinions and invalidity opinions for his clients. Peter is an expert in searching both patent literature and non-patent literature to inform his opinions and to address potential risks.

Peter entered the patent profession in 2003, and qualified as a Chartered UK Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney in 2008. In 2023, Peter became a representative of the Unified Patent Court. He has a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary University of London. Peter also holds a First Class MSci degree in Chemistry and Molecular Physics from the University of Nottingham. Whilst at Nottingham, Peter was awarded the F. Stanley Kipping prize in consecutive years and the University Exhibition Award in his final year.

Outside of work, Peter enjoys spending time with his young family and is a keen guitarist and music enthusiast.
